Survey (10 minutes)

Background

The IFC Road project, which is part of the Infrastructure Room within buildingSMART International, aims to extend the IFC data model into the road domain by describing the semantics and geometry of a typical road.

Phase 1 of the project was the requirements analysis stage, where we developed the use-cases, process diagram and taxonomy for the Road domain. The finalised Requirements Analysis report was published in December 2018.

Phase 2 of the project commenced in 2019, focusing on the technical development of the schema. During this stage, we developed a conceptual model and schema extension, produced draft International Property definitions and started a prototypical implementation of the schema with some of the leading software vendors in the industry. At the end of 2019, a collaborative process with the other linear Infrastructure projects produced a harmonised conceptual model and schema extension. Now, in March 2020, the buildingSMART International Standards Committee are currently voting to recognise the work of IFC Road as a candidate standard.

The results of this work to date are available to view below.

What’s next for the IFC Road schema

The IFC Road schema will now be validated and implemented along with the other linear infrastructure projects as part of the Infrastructure Extensions deployment project. We are now closer than ever to our goal of bringing an open data standard for Roads to the industry.
