IFC 3D symbols with Psets as part of a national library

At the Swedish transport administration we currently hold a library of 3D and 2D symbols with required properties as dgn and dwg. At the start of a project this library is shared with the assigned parties in a contract.

We are debating the usefulness of converting these to IFC4.3.2 format with type objects and properties…

What are your thoughts, can these IFC type objects be used in the authoring software typically used for roads and railway design.

I’m not sure if IFC type objects can be used in authoring software for roads and rails - that depends on their implementation maturity.

I think the concept is sound. I am advocating that the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) publish a library of signs from the national standard Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) - FHWA. Sign information is also a prime candidate for a classification system in the bSDD.

The US is exploring the idea of a Central BIM Transportation Library. Here is a link to the report
