IFC Development Monthly Call - 20 August 2020

Greetings buildingSMART Technical Community,

The next meeting will be 20 August 2020, 13.00 UTC/GMT

Topic:

Do we want/need IfcOwnerHistory?

Topic Summary:

While always part of the schema IfcOwnerHistory has had sporadic and inconsistent implementation. It has been an optional instantiation, assigned to each object, relationship, and/or properties. Concerns include, but are not limited to:

  • File bloat
  • File- vs. entity/class-based tracking of history
  • Relationship to CDEs
  • Impact on full- vs. partial-model exchanges
  • Supporting multiple serializations (schema defintion vs. implementation)

The conversation also crosses concerns with some kind of logical, persistent identification system as identified by:

If we move away from “file-centric” exchanges, how do we conserve consistency between exchanges of partial datasets?

How can data providers (sending data) know the history of updates in a distributed ecosystem of online CDEs?

Is it a responsibility of the online tools (CDEs) to guard the consistency of their dataset? Should we use API definitions (or header information) to define information that is now ‘hidden’ inside a file?

Or should we just drop it all together since nobody is using it anyway?
