In IFC4 it’s the very same concept [Property Sets for Objects](https://standards.buildingsmart.org/IFC/RELEASE/IFC4/ADD2_TC1/HTML/) applies to IfcMaterial, the confusing thing here is that IfcMaterial is not an object. But it’s not that different - [IfcMaterialProperties](https://standards.buildingsmart.org/IFC/RELEASE/IFC4/ADD2_TC1/HTML/link/ifcmaterialproperties.htm) holds link to [IfcMaterialDefinition](https://standards.buildingsmart.org/IFC/RELEASE/IFC4/ADD2_TC1/HTML/link/ifcmaterialdefinition.htm) with inverse _HasProperties_ attribute. ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex016/uploads/buildingsmart1/original/2X/8/847f2116589e39cd9cc0e7066799dd82e77ded07.png) Relevant discussion from not too long ago.
